A history that’s anything but green
Being eco-friendly these days is all the rage. But for us, the green movement started well before it became a mainstream fad. In fact, GEM® electric vehicles have been manufactured for more than a decade. Guess you could say we were ahead of our time.
Setting the wheels in motion
In 1998, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the green light to street-legal operation of low-speed, or neighborhood electric vehicles (NEV) that included safety features such as headlamps, safety belts windshield wipers and safety glass. Since then, we’ve included those features on every GEM car we’ve produced.
Large impact, small footprint
As the awareness of energy and resource conservation has grown, so too has the consideration of many to implement more eco-friendly practices. With zero emissions, minimal energy use and small global footprint, GEM cars represent a viable way to sustain transportation needs while offering a solution to traffic congestion, air pollution and noise control.

Today, the six unique GEM models account for more than 45,000 cars on the road.
