Steve Blackford: Raising Questions About Helmets
Webmaster Note: Steve sent his letter in response to a Victory Blog item reporting that U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters urged motorcycle manufacturers to promote helmet usage and rider safety training.

Folks,

I have attended the funerals of at least eight friends from motorcycle/cage accidents. Why can't the Feds put helmets on some crash test dummies and sling them against a brick wall? Will the helmets break necks or save skulls? Has anyone done a definitive study on the injuries in fatal accidents to determine the absolute cause of death or do the authorities just see no helmet and stop there?

My wife and I both ride our machines with helmets, but cannot state with certainty that the helmets will save our lives in an accident or possibly end our lives.

Thanks,
– Steve Blackford
