I live on the South Plains of Texas. 40 mph winds are very common. In the spring of ’06, my wife on her ‘03 Vegas and me on my ‘05 Touring Cruiser headed out for the Rattle Snake Roundup in Sweetwater, Texas, around 130 miles south of us.
The weather was good. The roundup was boring. We hit I-20 heading West to Monahans, Texas, to look up a biker we had met on the road. We could not find him, but it was getting late. So we got a room for the night.
Got up early and headed to Kermit, Texas, for breakfast. Pulled in to the restaurant. There was six or seven scooters setting out front. Had breakfast and talked to the other bikers. The weather had been great up to this point. When we pulled out of Kermit, the wind was getting up out of the West.
We headed Northwest on Highway 115 toward Andrews, 65 miles away. The wind and dust was blowing hard by the time we got to Andrews.
We stopped and bought bandanas to put over our faces. Then we headed North toward Lubbock. The wind was hitting us in the left side. I was leaning so far to the left, I felt like I could reach over and touch the ground.
We had to pull over once because you could not see more than 10 feet in front of us. Then halfway between Andrews and Seminole we hit grass fires. Now it was wind, dust and smoke.
Well, we finally got home. On the weather report that night they reported there had been wind gust in the 60s.
