Webmaster’s Note: Victory Rider David Halen sent an e-mail to the Victory Mailbag with the subject line, “Your Bike Saved My Life – Really!” Here is his letter.
Dear Victory, I wanted to write and tell you how much I LOVED my ‘07 Kingpin Tour. I searched and waited for months before I finally found it at Colorado Powersports in Denver and bought it.
Sadly, two months and 2,500 miles after buying my bike, a deer decided to occupy the same space as me and my bike on the highway.
My passenger was thrown off the bike on impact, and I rode the bike to the ground (no doubt yelling "NOT MY BIKE, NOT MY BIKE" the whole way down).
Luckily, my passenger suffered only whiplash and a concussion when she was thrown. I fared worse with seven broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade, some internal trauma and ripped PCS and ACL.
However, it could and would have been much worse if it weren't for the bomb-proof way the Kingpin is built.
We T-boned the deer and almost cut him in half. The wind screen took the brunt of the impact AND STAYED INTACT! The mounting brackets bent like a crumple zone on a car, but stayed attached to the forks, and the wind screen itself kept its shape and didn't break.
Had either of those two parts given way, I would not be typing this message to you.
Unfortunately, the bike sustained too much damage and was totaled by the insurance company. I begged them not to total it, but to repair it so I'd still have my bike. But after I was finally able to look at the bike for the first time since the accident (almost 2 1/2months later), I could see why they totaled it out.
I've attached some pictures of the bike post accident for you to see.
Victory is the most awesome bike I've ever owned (this was my fourth), and I will absofreakinlutely buy another one when I save up the money for it. Getting the VR magazines is such a tease, but the Victory Cross Country sure is a beautiful bike!
I wish I was a more eloquent writer, but I think you get the idea how much I love Victory bikes.
Thank you for building such an awesome machine. I have no doubt that had I been on any other manufacture's bike, I would be dead.
Keep up the GREAT work.
– David Halen
