The Polaris/Lone Star/Eichner Racing team weathered the storms at Round 1 of the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) and brought home a little sunshine from the team's initial outing. The racing took place at Speedworld, in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 25-27.
Extreme rain left mud covering the track at Speedworld, but the Polaris Outlaw-mounted team proved what teamwork is all about.
In championship style, the team effort – captained by multi-time National and World Champion and ATV racing legend Doug Eichner – led to their first Pro win of the season with Eichner winning the Pro Production Class aboard his Outlaw 525 S while setting the fastest lap time of the weekend.
Nine-time Women’s National Champion Angela Butler – new to the WORCS venue and the Polaris Outlaw – blasted her way through the competition to bring home her first win of the season in the Women’s A class and ran seventh in the Pro Am Class aboard the Outlaw 450. The entire team is very excited about her future racing the Outlaw and Butler welcomes the new challenge of the WORCS racing series.
Up-and-coming-superstar John Shafe provided the team with a holeshot start in the Pro Main aboard the Outlaw 450 equipped with a Yoshimura-enhanced motor and exhaust system and a FOX Racing Shox suspension setup. Despite the less-than-desirable conditions of rain and mud, which ultimately eliminated more than half the field of competitors, Shafe capably piloted his Outlaw to a well-earned top-five finish for his team.
Youth rider and four-time national champion Caide Hunt brought home a top-five finish as well in the 71-90cc Mod class on her nearly-stock Outlaw 90 MXR. This race provided Hunt with her first opportunity to climb aboard her new machine and she held off much of the competitive field of 17.
Support rider and ATV desert racing star Mark Speath piloted the Outlaw 525 IRS to a second place finish in the Masters 40 A class. Speath's first competition aboard the versatile machine has the team looking forward to this respected campaigner's hard charge at WORCS Round 2.
Eichner Races the RZR Doug Eichner's Polaris RANGER RZR – equipped with FOX Racing Shox, shining black Fullbore Innovations body, MasterCraft seats and harnesses with a red roll cage, arms and bumpers by Lone Star Racing – was almost too stunning to race. Eichner left the start line demonstrating incredible speed and talent that left spectators gasping as he grabbed the holeshot from the 11 side-by-side lineup. Eichner continued his hard charge despite his view being obstructed by his open hood for much of the race. Co-pilot, support rider and good friend Mark Speath helped navigate as Eichner crossed the finish line to secure a strong second-place finish.
The team has high hopes heading to the next WORCS race scheduled for February 22-24, in Mesquite, Nevada.
