Daryl Rath, who is respected for his technical expertise and race bike building skills as well as for his ATV racing prowess, put a Polaris Sportsman on the podium at the GNCC’s Round 7 on the 2008 schedule.

Rath placed third in the Utility Open Class and came in 56th overall from among 300 racers at “The Spartan,” the GNCC Racing race held May 31-June 1 at the Lawrence Family Ranch in Sparta, Kentucky.

Rath, who lives in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and leads the Polaris/Rath Racing/Dunlop race team, completed six laps on the demanding course in 2 hours 28:19 and was the last of the riders in the class to finish on the lead lap.

In the Super Senior (50 ) class at Sparta, Polaris racer John Gallagher of Aurora, Ohio, finished third.

“I am extremely happy with our performance today,” Rath said. “It was our first showing on this machine in a class that has had seasoned contenders in it all year. We met our goal of finishing in the top three, and with the first race unknowns out of the way, I am looking forward to making some changes and small improvements to prove the Sportsman is a contender.”

Respected for his tuning, bike-building and accessories development work, Rath will likely make all the right changes to improve the machine’s racing performance. He credited an engine tuning partner for giving him a boost for the Sparta race.

“Dirty Dawg stepped in and did some mild engine modifications along with some clutching,” Rath said. “I am very excited to see what they have for us by next round.”

Rath lined up alongside his teammate Frank Batista for the start. After a chaotic first woods section, Rath made his way around a bottleneck and proceeded to run a flawless race. The track had some very tight sections and the skills of the veteran GNCC racers showed as they maneuvered through the trees.

Running his first GNCC event, Batista, a racer from Riverdale, California, finished a respectable eighth, completing four laps in 1:49:53.

Round 8 on the GNCC schedule will be the Elka Yadkin Valley Stomp, which will be held June 21-22 in Yadkinville, N.C.
