10th Anniversary Riders’ Rides: CHRISTOPHER SCHIER Recovering from Unplanned Deer Hunt
Christopher Schier
This letter arrived from Christopher Schier in the Victory Mailbag on October 26. It’s quite a story, and we are hoping for an update that Christopher’s leg – and Victory Vision – are good enough to get back out on the road. Christopher, who is from Washingtonville, New York, said he is 6 ft., 250 lbs., so the ability to stretch out on the Victory Vision was really appealing.

I purchased a 2007 Triumph America from Locomotion Powersports [the Victory dealer in Suffern, NY] in February 2008. It's a great bike!. I have put over 6,000 miles on it this year.

The lady of my house was feelings left out. She suggested I purchase a touring bike so she could accompany me on my many rides. I test rode several larger bikes...Triumph's and Harley's....none of which felt comfortable to me with my long legs. Anthony suggested I take the "Mercedes" out for a ride.

He tossed me the key to a Victory Vision Tour Comfort. It was loaded. Stereo, power wind screen, cruise control, heated seats, and grips. This was the largest Motorcycle I had ever ridden. My legs found nothing but space, the seat was comfortable, and the V-Twin delivered smooth power. The handling and balance was way more than I had expected. The bike was heavy, but not top heavy. The weight is situated low. It handled road conditions that used to jar me on my Triumph like they were not even there.

I took a trip around Suffern to several different types of road conditions. The bike was a dream to ride. When I returned to Locomotion Power Sports I returned the key with a huge grin.

Anthony suggested I take my lady for a test ride. I agreed. The two of us took the bike up into Harriman State Park. It was a great ride. My lady agreed that the bike would be a great addition to our family. I purchased the Vision Tour Premium. I brought it home on a Friday.

That Sunday my lady and I put 200 miles on the odometer during the "Lost Wheel MC Club's Poker Run". The bike was invited into their bike show that day and was well received by many, though, it did not win. The following Monday I drove it to work where it received many compliments from all who saw it. Tuesday it was rainy so I left the Vision home.

Wednesday was nice so I jumped on the bike to go to work. I was about a mile from home when a full sized deer jumped into the road. The deer froze in my headlight. I hit the animal at about 30 mph. I heard the fairing crunch. I felt the sting of the deer's ass slamming into my right leg.

I never lost control of the machine. I cleared the deer and then found a driveway to get off the road. I switched on the hazard blinkers, shut off the motor, and flagged down help.

The bike was damaged but mostly cosmetically. My right leg was screaming. I knew it was broken so I could not dismount the bike.

A lady stopped and asked if I needed help. I thanked her, and asked her to call the police. The police arrived and confirmed the deer had expired. They got me an ambulance, and my Victory a tow.

I have a cast for the next three month's. The bike needs a new fairing. That is one well engineered machine. I think things would have been very different if I had been on my Triumph.

I can't wait to get back out on the road

– Christopher Schier
